Students who attend private schools are more likely to become doctors than their public school counterparts, prompting many Australian parents to reconsider their children's education.

A 10-year longitudinal study has identified gaps in educational advancement across the country between those who attend government and non-government schools.

It raises the question of whether attending a non-government school gives students an advantage later in their careers.

The Australian Population Research Institute study, led by David McCloskey, tracked the employment profiles of students who were in secondary school in 2011 for the following 10 years.

It found students who attended Catholic secondary schools had the highest levels of employment, with 87 per cent of females and 85 per cent of male
