Australians have been warned that the fight to tame inflation has done little to ease the burden of higher prices, which could be here to stay.

Fronting a parliamentary grilling on Monday, Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock said the country had been under significant pressure in recent years.

“We know that high inflation has pushed prices up across the board over the past few years,” she said.

“While inflation has fallen materially, the price level isn’t coming back down.”

Bullock said no one had been immune from the impact of increased prices.

“It’s been especially tough on people with lower incomes and those in more vulnerable situations,” she said.
