JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville man is dead after FHP investigators said he was hit and killed by a car while trying to cross Phillips Highway near Deercreek late Sunday night.

Investigators said the 40-year-old man was crossing Phillips Highway near Energy Center Drive around 9:31 p.m. Sunday when he stepped into the path of an SUV, resulting in a crash. An unknown recreational vehicle then hit the SUV, but failed to remain on scene, FHP said.

The man was pronounced dead on scene by arriving paramedics.

FHP is still investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
