Energy firm Ovo is pushing for change to social tariffs, urging the government and industry at large to start providing a targeted tariff which would offer discounted energy bills to the households most in need. According to its newest report by the Green Alliance think tank, this change could lift millions out of fuel poverty.

Fuel-poor households were classified as those who spend more than 10% of their income, after housing costs, on heating and powering their homes. Currently, there are nine million fuel-poor households in England.

In 2024, these households would have needed an extra £407 to escape fuel poverty, which is a 62% increase since 2020 according to the report. The main means of targeted seasonal support for these households are the Winter Fuel Payment and
