Calgary’s warm season is famously short.

We try to take advantage of this as much as we can — and one of the ways is through a relaxing evening with friends old and new at one of the city’s many street-side patios.

However, what could be a totally comfortable evening is usually punctuated by the sound of one or more people revving the engines on their obnoxiously loud two- or four-wheeled vehicle.

Sometimes, they can backfire so suddenly and loudly, it can cause those nearby to flinch. The uninitiated might even mistake the sound for the crackle of gunfire.
