The summer months are known to see an increase in homicides across Indianapolis, and this year proved no different. In fact, nearly as many people were killed during the three months of summer than the first five months of the year, Indianapolis police and IndyStar data show.
The city is not alone in seeing that summer violent crime uptick. Even the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has taken note of the issue. A study by the agency published in October 2024 found that higher temperatures were "significantly associated with crime, violence, or both."
