CLEVELAND, Ohio - A Cleveland Metroparks Zoo rhino has given birth to a male calf, adding to the critically endangered eastern black rhino population.

The calf was born September 13 to his 14-year-old mother, Kibibbi. The calf, who has yet to be named, is bonding with his mother and learning to walk. The zoo's animal care team is monitoring their progress.

Zoo officials said the birth coincides with World Rhino Day, celebrated annually on September 22.

Eastern black rhinos are considered critically endangered, with fewer than 600 adults remaining in the wild.

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo participates in the Eastern Black Rhino Species Survival Plan, a program that helps manage the species' population in accredited zoos and aquariums.

The calf is not yet available for public viewing.
