UK health experts have slammed "fearmongering" in the US after it was reported Donald Trump's administration are set to say there is a link between paracetamol use in pregnancy and autism.

The allegation comes as The Wall Street Journal claimed US health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr is expected to say Tylenol – which is paracetamol in the UK – is a potential cause of autism.

Reporters have said a federal report is also expected to recommend a specific type of the vitamin folate as a way to treat the disorder.

British scientists have now hit back at the statement, with one stating it “risks stigmatising families who have autistic children as having brought it on themselves."
