The North Bergen Board of Education has backed off its controversial plan to build a school in Braddock Park, leaving behind the 17 “temporary” classroom trailers that the district set up in 2001 and residents have been fighting over ever since.
North Bergen school superintendent George J. Solter announced last week that the estimated $17 million construction cost “is not financially feasible” so the district will drop its application to the state Department of Environmental Protection to swap land in exchange for the 1.3-acre tract in Braddock Park.
In a prepared statement, Solter said the new school is no longer needed because the district has a new school realignment plan.
