A Maine man was arrested Mexico after he allegedly fled the country amid sexual assault accusations.

Marc Assante, 37, formerly of South Portland, was indicted by a York County grand jury on seven counts of gross sexual assault on March 6, 2023, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

He pleaded not guilty and was free on bail.

But Assante failed to appear in court on July 14, when prosecutors planned to request more restrictive bail conditions. A judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

U.S. marshals determined he had fled the country to Mexico, where he was hiding in Hermosillo.
