Rock band Phish is speaking out after a stabbing outside the group's Virginia concert over the weekend left one person dead and two more injured.

According to local authorities, shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 19, police responded to a report of a stabbing outside the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia, where Phish was performing. Upon arrival, police found two injured men, according to a press release from the Hampton Police Department; one of the men died later at a hospital after succumbing to his injuries. A third victim walked into an area hospital to receive treatment for a non-life-threatening laceration.

USA TODAY has reached out to the police department for further updates.

In a statement posted to Instagram Sept. 20, Phish characterized the stabbing as "tragic" and "upsetting."

"During last night’s show, a tragic incident took place in the parking lot outside Hampton Coliseum. There was an altercation behind one of the tents in the unofficial vending area in which someone lost their life and two other people were injured," the group wrote.

The incident came after an argument among the men escalated, police said. The suspect fled on foot, and police detained a possible perpetrator shortly after. As of Sept. 20, police confirmed the fight had been an isolated incident and identified all participants.

"We don't have more information than what has been reported by the police, who called it an isolated incident, but what we do know is upsetting enough," Phish, which is in the midst of a sprawling U.S. tour, added in the statement. "We are deeply saddened by this and our hearts go out to all of those affected."

The Vermont-born rock band, which rose to fame in the late '80s and claims a doggedly loyal fanbase, is set to travel to New York City in December for a stint at Madison Square Garden.
