Fat Bear Week is here: the time to vote on the largest bear of the year in Alaska.
Some of the world's largest brown bears live at Brooks River in Katmai National Park.
This annual competition is meant to celebrate bears' preparation for winter hibernation.
Katmai bears are fattest from late summer through early fall after they eat enough all summer to survive the winter.
During hibernation, bears do not eat or drink and lose one-third of their body weight, according to Explore.
Voting begins September 23 and lasts through September 30. Voting is open from 12:00pm until 9:00pm Eastern time each day. Voting is closed on September 27 and 28.
