CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. - The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said a man is being investigated for a death that happened in 2021.

Deputies said John Lucas Rice, 21, was charged on Friday with the murder of a man who went missing back in late 2021.

At a hearing on Saturday evening, Rice was denied bond.

The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office said that on Aug. 22, deputies received information from the Spartanburg County Cold Case Unit regarding a missing person, Kevin Scott Brookshire . The information alleged Rice had shown someone a decomposing body in a trash bag lying in the backyard of a home on Robbs School Road, according to officials.

Deputies said they responded to the home on the same day they received the information and used cadaver canines to find human remains. The coroner
