Calvin University made history with the football program’s first overtime win, and rival Hope College also escaped with a narrow victory on Saturday.

Calvin defeated Heidelberg University, 40-37, on an 11-yard walk-off touchdown pass from Franklin, Tenn., native Thomas Vaccaro to Holland Christian grad Luke Michmerhuizen in the first overtime period.

The Knights led for much of the contest, but fell behind 37-34 following Heidelberg’s first overtime possession, which ended with a 38-yard field goal.

A 12-yard pass from Vaccaro to Jude Klunder (Grand Rapids Christian) moved Calvin inside the 15-yard line, and after an incompletion and a short run set up third-and-8, the 6-foot-7 Michmerhuizen pulled down a contested catch in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.
