IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - When you see a fire truck’s flashing lights coming toward you on the highway Iowa law says you have to slow down or change lanes.
But now the Iowa City Fire Department can alert you of an approaching fire truck before you can even see or hear it.
It’s installed a new system called HAAS Alert , and it will soon be installed in all of the city’s fire trucks.
“If we notify one person. One person slows down and moves over, we’re making progress,” Battalion Chief Zach Hickman with the Iowa City Fire Department said.
When a small box is plugged in - it will alert drivers using Waze or Apple Maps when a fire department vehicle is within a half a mile.
