Several days ago, I was reading a piece in the New York Times about Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ordering the removal of a rainbow-colored crosswalk that had been created by community activists to honor the 49 people killed at a popular gay nightclub in Orlando. The state was supposedly responding to a federal directive from President Donald Trump. His administration had determined it was a political demonstration on public land that was also critical of the president.
