FRANKFORT, Ky. – Health officials are warning that a public health advisory has been issued for Carpenters Lake near Owensboro.
According to a release Monday by Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, recent samples have confirmed the presence of a harmful algal bloom in the area.
HABs occur when there are excess nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen), sunny conditions, warm temperatures and low-flow or low-water conditions, officials say. They can appear as slicks of opaque, bright-green paint but often have a grainy, sawdust-like appearance.
The release states humans and animals should avoid contact with affected water and should not swim, paddle or water-ski near the water that has an unusual color or where blue-green algae have been identified.
