KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Justice Department reached a settlement with Kansas City, Kansas Community College (KCKCC) to enforce the reemployment rights of servicemembers.

The settlement comes after Kansas Army National Guard Major Stephen W. Terry claimed that KCKCC violated the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA).

USERRA protects servicemembers from employment discrimination and ensures job security, as well as the restoration of their benefits when returning to their jobs.

Terry said the college violated USERRA when it terminated his employment following his return from military service. The claim includes lost wages to Terry and a requirement that KCKCC train management and human resources staff about the rights of servicemembers and employers.
