Seemingly expired COVID test kits continued to prove useful as health officials advised New Yorkers to check for extended expiration dates on the at-home respiratory virus fighting tool.

The COVID test extended expiration guidance covered select brands, with some granted an additional 18-month to 24-month extension in usefulness, the U.S. Food and Drug Adminisrtation noted Sept. 16. Some other brands had an extended useful life that added an additional 17 to 20 months.

Do expired COVID tests work?

Federal officials determine when to extend the shelf life of seemingly expired at-home COVID tests as part of their sprawling efforts aimed at ensuring Americans have access to drugs, medical products and other health care tools during times of need.
