BRUNSWICK -- Harriet Beecher Stowe is well known in history for her anti-slavery views which inspired her to write Uncle Tom's Cabin, a best-selling novel that was penned right here in Maine. Our station recently stopped by the home to learn more.

On Federal Street in B runswick sits the H arriet Beecher S towe House. This is where the author, her husband C alvin , who taught at Bowdoin College, and their six children once lived back in 1850s.

"The rent on this house was exorbitant in their minds. It was $250 a year, which was double what they were led to believe," explained Cathi Belcher, the educator and guide at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House. "So as soon as she got here she started writing stories and sent them off just to put food on the table."
