A former MBTA Transit Police sergeant has been sentenced for his role in filing a false report on an officer's assault of a man at a Red Line station in Boston in 2018 , federal prosecutors said.

David Finnerty, 49, was indicted by a federal jury in 2023 and pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of aiding and abetting the filing of a false report.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Finnerty, a Rutland resident, was the officer in charge of the overnight shift at Ashmont Station on July 27, 2018.
