A Spartanburg man has been arrested in a 2021 homicide after human remains were found in Gaffney yard.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller, John Lucas Rice, 21, of Spartanburg, was arrested on Sept. 19, after Cherokee County deputies said he confessed to killing Kevin Scott Brookshire of Chesnee nearly three years ago.

Investigators with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's cold case unit, following up on a tip, contacted the Cherokee County Sheriff about Brookshire, a missing person.

On Aug. 22, Cherokee County deputies searched a house at 1316 Robbs School Road in Gaffney. During the search, K9 dogs discovered human remains in the backyard. On Sept. 15, Cherokee County coroners identified the remains as Brookshire.
