BEAUMONT, Texas — A Jefferson County jury has sentenced a 43-year-old Southeast Texas man to 28 years in prison on Monday after finding him guilty last week on child sex abuse charges.

David Allen Tovar, 43, on Friday was found guilty of continuous sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony that carries a punishment range of 25 years to life in prison.

The punishment phase of Tovar's trial begin Monday morning at about 10:30 a.m. Monday morning and by about 2:35 p.m. the jury's decision was read in court.

Tovar, who was previously convicted in 2002 of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl, has been on trial all week in Judge John Stevens’ courtroom. Jurors returned the guilty verdict just minutes before 5 p.m.
