Sep 22, 2025; Baltimore, Maryland, USA; Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry (22) rushes the ball against the Detroit Lions during the first half at M&T Bank Stadium.

It’s said that in the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight. Whoever said that never met these Detroit Lions, who are wide awake in Week 3.

Dan Campbell’s Lions were a clear underdog on Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens but marched out of the “Charm City” with a 38-30 victory. While the Ravens have been considered a clear Super Bowl contender, the Lions have been thought of as pretenders following the loss of both coordinators in the offseason.

You wouldn’t know it on Monday night, as John Morton’s offense shined and Kelvin Sheppard’s defense stole the show.

Plenty of questions were raised in Detroit after a blowout loss in Week 1. They remained after a blowout win in Week 2. Those questions will be put to rest after a dominating performance on the road in Baltimore in Week 3.

The game was tied at the end of every quarter except the fourth, but Detroit’s toughness on both sides of the ball was the difference.

Lamar Jackson struggled to find open receivers towards the end of this contest and the Lions gave him no space to run but it was Derrick Henry’s costly fumble that was a backbreaker for the second time in three weeks.

Baltimore now faces plenty of questions around its defense after falling to 1-2, with a matchup in Kansas City against the Chiefs on tap next week. As for the now 2-1 Lions, they’ll host the Cleveland Browns.

Here’s how the Monday night matchup unfolded from Baltimore. USA TODAY Sports provided live updates, highlights and more from the matchup below.

Ravens vs. Lions highlights

Ravens vs. Lions final score: Lions 38, Ravens 30

Sam LaPorta recovers the onside kick

Loop delivered a good one with a big hop, but the tight end comes up with the ball and seals the victory for the visitors.

Mark Andrews second TD keeps Baltimore alive

The Ravens aren’t going quietly into the night as Andrews gets his second touchdown of the game. They fail on the two-point try and will have to recover an onside kick to avoid falling to 1-2.

Lions 38, Ravens 30

David Montgomery with the dagger TD

The Ravens couldn’t muster up anything on their drive and the Lions ice it with their offense. Following a fourth-down conversion, Montgomery snags his second touchdown of the night to push the lead to 14 with 1:42 to go.

Lions 38, Ravens 24

Ravens-Lions score update: Baltimore defense holds, Detroit adds three

The fumble doesn’t come back to haunt Henry, too much, as the Ravens defense gets the job done. Jake Bates converts the field goal attempt from 45, but this game isn’t over yet. Baltimore is down seven with 6:35 to go.

Lions 31, Ravens 24

Derrick Henry fumbles, Lions recover

With his third fumble in as many games, Henry coughs it up immediately. Aidan Hutchinson punched it out, giving his team the ball back after Henry’s costly turnover.

Ravens get the stop

Baltimore gets exactly what it needed after the field goal. Detroit goes three-and-out, sending the ball back to the home team. The Ravens are down four with just over eight minutes to go.

Ravens-Lions score update: Tyler Loop adds three

The Ravens can’t get into the end zone on this drive and are forced to settle for three from Loop. His kick is good from 41 yards out, cutting the Detroit lead to four. It was certainly close, but the referees ruled that the ball was just inside the upright. The Lions’ fifth sack of the night forced the try as Kelvin Sheppard’s defense was able to keep Jackson in the pocket.

Lions 28, Ravens 24

Jahmyr Gibbs gives Detroit the lead

Gibbs gets the Lions back into the end zone with his second touchdown of the night in what has been a wild, back-and-forth affair. It was all set up by David Montgomery’s 72-yard run and capped off with a funky play design from John Morton.

Lions 28, Ravens 21

End of third quarter: Tied at 21

The Lions have marched down the field again after being pinned down inside their own five-yard line for the second time tonight. The big chunk play came in the form of a 72-yard rush from David Montgomery. We are in familiar territory at the end of the third quarter – tied again. Each team added seven points to their halftime total, meaning we head to the final quarter knotted at 21 apiece. The Lions have a fourth down coming up inside the Baltimore five-yard line when we return. It should be a wild finish in the Charm City.

Ravens go three-and-out, punt back to Lions

Baltimore fails to respond to Detroit's touchdown and punts the ball back. Lamar Jackson was sacked by Al-Quadin Muhammad on second down. Jordan Stout's punt was downed at the Lions 4-yard line. Detroit takes over with 3:36 to go in the third quarter.

Amon-Ra St. Brown TD evens the score

Detroit responds with an impressive seven-play drive, which ended in a perfect throw from Jared Goff to St. Brown in the right corner of the end zone from 18 yards. Jake Bates nails the extra point to tie the score up again.

Ravens 21, Lions 21

Mark Andrews TD for the lead

There has been plenty of discussion about Andrews since his costly playoff drop and slow start to the season. The critics are quiet tonight as the Ravens’ TE has turned back the clock. He leads the team with five catches for 64 yards and now has a touchdown to go with it. Baltimore is on top for the first time tonight.

Ravens 21, Lions 14

What is the longest made field goal in NFL history?

While Bates missed the record-breaking attempt, it would’ve been quite the role reversal. Former Ravens’ kicker Justin Tucker drilled a 66-yard attempt to defeat the Lions in 2021, which remains the longest made field goal in NFL history. The Jaguars’ Cam Little unofficially holds that honor after making a 70-yard field goal during the 2025 preseason. However, preseason stats don’t count for the record books.

Halftime team stats

  • Time of possession: DET 19:48 | BAL 10:12
  • Total yards: DET 192 | BAL 146
  • Passing yards: DET 135 | BAL 80
  • Rushing yards: DET 57 | BAL 66
  • First downs: DET 14 | BAL 10
  • Penalties: DET 4 (32 yards) | BAL 1 (5 yards)
  • Turnovers: DET 0 | BAL 0
  • Total plays: DET 38 | BAL 21

Ravens vs. Lions halftime score: Tied at the break

Both teams traded punches on offense, but we’re right back to where we started. The Lions’ drives have been long and methodical while the Ravens’ have been fast and furious. Baltimore gets the ball to start the third quarter.

Jake Bates misses field goal from 67

Trying to engineer a scoring drive with little time left in the half, Detroit had a chance for points. It would’ve taken a record-breaking field goal from Bates, but he misses from 67 yards out to bring us to halftime. It appeared to have the distance before fading wide left.

Rashod Bateman ties it before halftime

After Baltimore’s defense forced a punt, the Ravens were gifted with a short field. Jackson and the offense take advantage of the opportunity, marching for the game-tying touchdown. Bateman hauls it in with just 24 seconds to go in the quarter.

Ravens 14, Lions 14

Ravens turn it over on downs

Looking to tie the game, Baltimore had four plays inside the Detroit five-yard line, including two at the one, and did not score. It ends with a fumble from Lamar Jackson, and now Detroit will look to build on its lead before halftime.

David Montgomery puts Detroit back in front

The Lions decided they would be selfish, taking nearly 11 minutes off the clock in the second quarter before Montgomery finds paydirt. It took 18 plays and 98 yards to score on what has to be a draining and demoralizing drive for a struggling Ravens’ defense.

Lions 14, Ravens 7

End of first quarter: All tied up after 15 minutes

Both sides came out on fire, scoring touchdowns on their opening drive. Things slowed down after that, however, as the teams traded punts. Detroit will continue its third drive when we open the second quarter after this commercial break.

Ravens struggle on second drive, punt back to Detroit

The Ravens’ second drive was about as successful as the Lions. They promptly punt it right back to Detroit, pinning them inside the five.

What is a backwards pass?

A backwards pass, sometimes also called a lateral, is any pass that travels parallel or behind the point where a passer releases the ball. If the ball hits the ground, it is ruled a fumble as long as the ball stays in bounds.

With Goff’s throw, the ball was ruled to be a backward pass to Gibbs. Since it hit the ground, it’s a fumble and that is why it resulted in a nine-yard loss for Detroit.

Lions don’t answer, forced to punt

The second drive from Detroit didn’t look as clean. In fact, it was doomed from the start after the first down throw from Jared Goff was ruled a backwards pass, resulting in a nine-yard loss. It’s a close call that ultimately went unchallenged and the Lions would punt just a few plays later.

Derrick Henry ties the game

The Ravens saw the Lions’ opening drive and decided to match it. Derrick Henry waltzes into the end zone with a 28-yard rushing touchdown. Mark Andrews caught two passes on this series for Baltimore, already tying his season total through two weeks. Points are on the menu tonight, so hopefully you like offense.

Ravens 7, Lions 7

Ravens-Lions score update: Jahmyr Gibbs opens the scoring

There was plenty of talk about the Lions’ struggles on offense after Week 1. They quieted those concerns after dominating the Bears in Week 2. Now they made it look easy against the Ravens to start Week 3, marching for an opening drive touchdown. Gibbs capped it off with the one-yard score. Detroit featured plenty of Gibbs and Jameson Williams to get things started, while the Ravens had no answers. Buckle up.

Why are Lions' RBs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery nicknamed Sonic and Knuckles?

While nicknames can often be ironic in the sense that a smaller person might be called "biggie" the same way that a bigger person is often called "tiny," the duo's nickname, which is inspired by 1990s video game characters, should be taken literally.

The 23-year-old Gibbs is known for being a speedster, which is the reason he's now also known as, "Sonic," while the 28-year-old Montgomery brings a physical style, making him worthy of being known as, "Knuckles."

"Sonic and Knuckles," the nickname, was born in October in what has become a fun sideshow to a magical Lions season. Gibbs and Montgomery have a noticeable bond on and off the field, as one typically is not seen without the other. Both of them arrived in the Motor City ahead of the 2023 season, with Gibbs being drafted and Montgomery signing via free agency. - Nick Brinkerhoff

Aidan Hutchinson injury revisited

In Week 6 of the 2024 season, Detroit Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson had played in five games (the Lions had a Week 5 bye) and was leading the league with his eye-popping mark of 7.5 sacks. Then his season abruptly ended.

In the Week 6 game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Pro Bowl defensive end fractured both his tibia and fibula. The injury required immediate surgery and knocked Hutchinson out for the remainder of the Lions' special 2024 regular season. - Jack McKessy
