As Belleville’s crisis of addiction, mental health, and homelessness continues, Mayor Neil Ellis is calling upon the governments of Ontario and Canada help, saying the situation has actually worsened since he declared a state of emergency.
Ellis made his declaration in February 2024 following a string of opioid poisonings in the city.

“As of now, the city continues to operate under this declaration, recognizing that the problem not only persists, but has worsened since then,” reads a statement issued Monday by the mayor’s office.
