TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV)—Refuge House is hoping to expand its shelter with help from an upcoming fundraiser.
Refuge House, a nonprofit that serves victims of domestic violence and their families, is looking to renovate a building on its property and expand it as a new shelter for victims, creating the Dawn of Hope Center.
The work is something Refuge House Executive Director Emily Mitchem says is much needed.
“We are a small shelter for the size of our area,” Mitchem said. “We’re not able to get everyone into immediate safe housing that calls us for help. We are turning away over 100 people a month because we don’t have the space.”
Demand is so high right now, Refuge House has people on a waitlist of six to eight months.
