LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Falls Prevention Awareness Week is underway in Michigan. Governor Gretchen Whitmer made an official proclamation Monday morning, recognizing the cause.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says falls are one of the greatest causes of serious injuries and death among people over age 65. Experts say there's a lot we can do to prevent falls in the future.
One in four older adults report falling every year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
"In 2023, the latest data we have, over 1500 fall-related deaths were reported in Michigan,” said Nick Drzal, health promotion and active aging manager for MDHHS. “One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as a broken bone or head injury."
