GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - North Carolina drivers could face higher auto insurance bills following a hearing this week over a proposed 22.6 percent rate increase.

The North Carolina Rate Bureau, which represents insurance companies, presented its case to Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey in Raleigh. Causey opposed the increase, saying it was too high for consumers. Under state law, he has 45 days after the hearing to issue a ruling. The bureau can appeal the decision to the North Carolina Court of Appeals and, potentially, the state Supreme Court.

ECU Risk Management and Insurance Professor Dr. David Pooser said proposed increases occur when the Rate Bureau believes its losses will rise soon, resulting in insurance companies asking for larger rate increases.
