MOREHEAD, Ky. – A man has been arrested following the double homicide of a Rowan County mother and her 13-year-old daughter.

According to the Kentucky State Police, 44-year-old Joshua W. Cottrell of Morehead is charged with two counts of murder and one count of tampering with physical evidence.

Cottrell has been arrested as a suspect in the deaths of 37-year-old Kayla D. Blake and her 13-year-old daughter, Kennedi McWhorter, both of Morehead.

The Kentucky State Police says it opened an investigation into the homicide case on Friday.

Shortly after 9:15 a.m. Central Standard Time, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare check on a home on South Spring Street in Morehead.
