Humane Society Hastings-Prince Edward has secured new increased funding from the City of Belleville that will allow the free-standing, non-profit charity to better keep financial wolves from the door.

Councillors on Monday in regular session gave the nod to pre-budget approval to increase municipal funding for its pound services contract with the society by $255,800 bringing the total 2026 budget cost to $460,000.

The city does not have its own in-house animal services and depends solely on the humane society.

Council’s decision comes on the heels of years of historic underfunding by the city of the organization, said councillors before a unanimous vote was cast in favour of bumping up the society’s operating budget in the new year.
