The start of fall, also known as the autumnal equinox, marks the official start of astronomical fall on the northern hemisphere. While the Latin word "Equinox" translates to equal night, that's not completely true…not here, at least. Allow me to explain.
Just like its spring counterpart, the autumnal equinox is when the Earth's axis has no tilt toward or away from the sun. In theory, this would mean that everyone gets an equal amount of daylight. In practice, it's a little more complicated than that.
If we had a level, non-curved horizon and lived in a vacuum, we would indeed get that equal amount of daylight. Instead, we have
