Roanoke Bans Wolf-Dog Hybrids After Safety Concerns
The Roanoke City Council has unanimously voted to ban wolf-dog hybrids within city limits, citing public safety concerns and the risks these animals pose when not responsibly managed. The 7-0 decision reflects growing unease about keeping hybrids in neighborhoods, particularly near families and children.
While current owners will not be forced to surrender their pets, the new ordinance places strict conditions on them. Within 30 days, all wolf-dog hybrid owners must register their animals with the police department, pay a $150 annual registration fee, and carry at least $100,000 in liability insurance. In addition, proper shelter must be provided, located at least 500 feet from schools or daycare facilities.
