The Missouri Department of Transportation is looking to fill positions for full-time maintenance and emergency equipment operators this winter.
The department will offer greater flexibility for their emergency and volunteer help, introducing an 8-hour and 12-hour shift. The flexibility of shifts is part of an effort to increase recruitment for MoDOT.
MoDOT has had a shortage of employees for five years in a row, according to previous Missourian reporting . Last year, 3,000 employees worked during the winter, which was well below the department's expectations. Now, they employ even less.
Across Missouri, 2,400 employees maintain more than 33,000 miles of state routes, according to a news release. More are needed to treat highways before, during and after winter storms.
