Rob Cooper has been elected to Hamilton city council.
Voters in Ward 8 narrowly chose the longtime Hamilton Mountain Progressive Conservative operative and riding association president in Monday’s byelection over 25 other council hopefuls.
The tally done by city officials at Westmount Recreation Centre on Monday night remains unofficial until it is certified in the coming days.
Initial turnout figures show just over 20 per cent of about eligible 28,000 voters cast a ballot.
The contest featured the largest slate of candidates in a ward race in the city’s history. The byelection was triggered when John-Paul Danko vacated the seat in April after being elected as a Liberal MP for Hamilton West—Ancaster—Dundas.
