Recent news featured a claim by the Equal Protection Project charging discrimination is built into some University of Toledo scholarships. The example was the Patty Hanf Scholarship established by her employer for “women in accounting.” For 45 years it has fulfilled the goal while memoralizing Ms. Hanf, who was my sister. The EPP seemingly wants all scholarships unlimited by “sex, race or national origin.”

Apparently everyone should be eligible for any award. Such a demand is counterproductive: it has the potential to eliminate awards sponsored by groups wishing to promote, for example, disadvantaged minorities, underrepresented ethnicities, even religious elements.
