Later that summer, after a quarterfinal exit in men’s doubles at the Olympics, he explained why he was done. “I’m content to be finishing now. If I kept pushing, I could risk an injury that might end my career. I recognize this is the right moment.” Still, his goodbye at some of tennis’ biggest stages didn’t unfold exactly as he wished.
