IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Seven losing seasons in a row seems shocking for a historically good Iowa City West girls volleyball team.

The players knew it wouldn’t be eight.

“This season we knew this year was gonna be different,” said junior outside hitter Sophia Austen. “We were gonna change how people saw us, we were gonna improve our record.”

This season they’ve turned it around, sparked by a youth movement.

No seniors are in Iowa City West’s starting lineup. It’s two juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen.

“I think it really truly comes down to how much they love playing together,” said head coach Jaedynn Evans. “If they didn’t love playing together we wouldn’t be having the success we do have.”

They may be young, but they are talented.
