WHAT HAS HAPPENED SO FAR:

* Australia formally recognised Palestine as a sovereign state, with declarations also made by the UK, France and Canada

* Palestinian officials praised the recognition, while Israel and the US criticised the move stating leaders who did so were "rewarding terror"

* Mr Albanese had a 40-minute bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and discussed opportunities to work together, including on a future EU-Australia free trade agreement
