A top law officer is under pressure to resign after failing to declare she was related to a fatal hit-and-run driver who avoided jail time and called his Aboriginal victim "an oxygen thief".
Northern Territory Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby failed to declare the conflict of interest before commenting on the case of Jake Danby, her sister's stepson, who hit and killed an Aboriginal man and injured another.
Following public uproar when Danby avoided jail time for hit and run causing death, the NT Director of Public Prosecutions appealed the 12-month community corrections order sentence as "manifestly inadequate".
It emerged Danby had bragged in text messages that the man he killed in June 2024 was an "oxygen thief" and he would not go to jail.
