BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - In Beaufort County - the people have spoken and county council listened.

A proposed development on St. Helena Island will not move forward.

The Gullah Geechee people are an important part of Beaufort County.

This was on full display on Monday at a seven and a half-hour county council meeting with 70 total citizens signed up for public comment. The meeting was to decide the future of Saint Helena Island, where thousands of them call home.

“It’s probably one of the largest turnouts that I’ve seen in my history.”

“I’ve been to quite a few, but this is definitely the largest I’ve ever seen.”

The main agenda, a new zoning for Saint Helena, which also includes a new golf course.

Most importantly, it would remove the Cultural Protected Overlay Zone, which aim
