The number of deaths caused by alcohol in Scotland have dropped to their lowest level since 2019 after soaring during the coronavirus pandemic. ‌

The impact of social isolation caused by repeated lockdowns has been widely blamed for a spike in reports of problematic drinking in the early 2020s. ‌

There were 1,185 alcohol-specific deaths registered in 2024 - a drop of 92 fewer than in 2023. But the figure is still the fifth highest in the years since 2008. ‌
