Anastasia Zorchinsky, a member of the undergraduate council at Concordia University, recently expressed her concerns regarding the school's 2025-26 student handbook. Zorchinsky took to social media to highlight what she perceives as significant issues with the handbook, which is intended to provide essential information for students, including calendars and guidelines.
In a video posted online, Zorchinsky described the handbook as "Pro-Hamas and anti-western." She pointed out that the document features Palestinian flags but lacks Canadian flags. Additionally, she noted that the calendar does not include any Canadian or religious holidays, such as Christmas, while it does mention the Palestinians' "Nakba Day."
Zorchinsky further criticized the handbook for its messaging, stating that it promotes a narrative suggesting that students are under constant opposition. She claimed it encourages participation in strikes and describes actions like blockading classrooms as forms of resistance. Furthermore, she indicated that the handbook advises students on how to conceal their identities, which she argues contradicts the university's policies.
In an interview, Zorchinsky told a reporter that the handbook also instructs students on what to do if they engage in illegal activities. She expressed concern that the administration has distanced itself from the handbook's content, leaving uncertainty about whether a revised version will be issued or if measures will be taken to prevent future editions from becoming politically charged.
As of now, it remains unclear how the university will address these concerns or if any changes will be made to the handbook for the upcoming academic year.
