Traffic on the M1 has been stopped in both directions this afternoon

An air ambulance has landed on the M1 which is closed due to a "serious collision" this afternoon.

Police have closed the motorway between junction 20 for Lutterworth and junction 21 for Leicester.

All emergency services are attending the scene, including crews from fire service and East Midlands Ambulance Service, Leicestershire Live reports.

An air ambulance has also landed on the motorway.

National Highways reported at 12.50pm today: "The M1 in Leicestershire is CLOSED in both directions between J20 (Lutterworth) and J21 (M69, Leicester) due to a serious collision.

"All emergency services including an Air Ambulance are now on scene. Thanks for your patience if you're caught up within the closure."
