It all started seven years ago with two rabbits, so the legend goes.

Now, multiple colonies proliferate in a Helena neighborhood on and around Rodney Street ever since a former resident released his pet rabbits.

Residents between Temple Emanu-El synagogue and Helena Middle School are used to the animals frequenting their properties.

“It’s bunny central here,” resident Gail Kailing said. “But we don’t mind.”

Kailing and others in the area tend to gardens in front of their homes and have adjusted their gardening habits due to the rabbits.

“I wrapped all my garden beds in tall fences so they can’t get in as easily,” the organic food industry researcher said. “But I’ve never sprayed my plants with pesticides. If the bunnies were to get to my plants, I wouldn’t want them to die because of
