A tangled row over £450,000 in unpaid work has spiralled into allegations of corruption at South Ayrshire Council, drawing in the former chief executive, senior councillors and private contractors.
SJJ Contracts boss David O’Neill says he was duped by former Chief Executive, Mike Newall, into undertaking hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of work he was never paid for – at the High Flats in Ayr, Hourstons, St Ninian’s Primary and the Station Hotel – before being used in a bid to oust the then Council Leader Martin Dowey.

Mr O’Neill produced recordings, text messages and emails that he says show that senior management wanted to use a secret recording of a conversation between Mr O’Neill and Counclllor Dowey to oust the leader, while telling hi
