Sean "Diddy" Combs' legal team is requesting a prison sentence of no more than 14 months, which would effectively mean time served. This request follows a jury's conviction earlier this year for transportation for the purposes of prostitution. In a court filing made on Tuesday, Combs' attorneys stated, "It is time for Mr. Combs to go home to his family."
Combs has been in jail for over a year since his arrest in New York. He was acquitted of more serious charges, including sex trafficking and racketeering. His defense argues that he should only be sentenced for the specific crime for which he was convicted. They emphasized that it would be unjust to impose a harsher sentence based on the court's own findings regarding force or coercion.
The defense's memorandum, which spans 380 pages, includes letters of support from Combs' family, friends, and business associates. It also critiques the recommendations from prosecutors and the Probation Department, which are believed to suggest a sentence of around five years. The defense described the prosecutors' approach as overly harsh, stating, "The prosecutors, for their part, have lost all perspective."
Combs' attorneys highlighted that he did not profit from the prostitution-related activities. They described the case as "unique," noting that Combs transported Cassie Ventura, who testified under the pseudonym "Jane," along with male escorts for consensual sexual encounters. However, the women involved dispute the claims of consent.
In their appeal for leniency, Combs' lawyers portrayed him as a person of significant character, stating he has made substantial contributions throughout his life. They noted the personal losses he has endured, including the deaths of his father, best friend Christopher Wallace, known as Notorious B.I.G., and the mother of his children, Kim Porter.
The filing also mentioned Combs' struggles with substance abuse, anger, and anxiety, which he has only begun to address during his time in jail. Combs' sentencing is scheduled for October 3, and he continues to face multiple lawsuits alleging various forms of sexual misconduct. He has denied all allegations against him.
