LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Fayette County Board of Education voted 3-2 Monday night to approve an $827 million budget for the 2025-26 school year.
During the monthly action meeting, many spoke out about their concerns, criticizing Superintendent Demetrus Liggins and Board Chair Tyler Murphy while calling for an external audit of the district's finances. Concerns have stemmed from a $16 million shortfall and a failed push for an occupational property tax levy on a previous tentative budget.
Last week, Liggins testified in front of state lawmakers, saying the district has a balanced budget . However, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle said they believe trust in the district has eroded, and Liggins will have to work hard to earn it back.
