BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Erie County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a 35-year-old Niagara Falls woman has died at the Erie County Holding Center one day after being booked into the jail.
Elizabeth Calaty was taken into custody Sept. 19 on an arrest warrant for petit larceny, according to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. She was booked into the holding center at 10:45 a.m. after appearing in Buffalo City Court.
Officials said Calaty was placed on detox observation after intake. They say she refused a medical visit and signed off at 11:45pm.
Just after 8am the next morning, a deputy and nurse practitioner found Calaty unresponsive in her cell. Paramedics responded, but she was pronounced dead.
The sheriff’s office said there were no obvious signs of trauma. A search of the unit found no
