NOVI - Interstate 96 reopened Sept. 23 after a fiery early morning crash that killed two drivers closed the freeway for about seven hours.

The eastbound lanes of the freeway east of Beck Road were closed about 2 a.m. and reopened around 9 a.m., Police Chief Erick Zinser said.

Zinser said emergency personnel responded to a call of a vehicle fire on I-96 east of Beck Road at 2:08 a.m. and arrived to find two vehicles engulfed in flames.

Zinser said an initial investigation indicates that an Acura driven by a woman had a mechanical issue and was stopped in the "left inside lane."

Her vehicle was struck from the rear by a Kia Soul and both vehicles burst into flames, Zinser said. Both drivers died. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
