A city leader has vowed to launch a probe into the findings of Edinburgh Live's investigation into children missing from schools.

SNP councillor Euan Hyslop, who sits on the education, children and families committee, said he is ‘incredibly concerned’ about the revelations on the use of reduced timetables. He has committed to bringing a motion to ‘establish what data exists’ for their use in the capital.

It comes as an Edinburgh Live special report found more than 1,100 pupils across the capital currently attend school on a part-time basis.

Some 140 primary school children and 978 pupils in council-run secondary schools have been placed on reduced timetables , with fears raised that the measure is being used as a last resort when schools are struggling to meet the complex needs of
